Benefit of Sauna Therapy
Sauna therapy has substantial evidence supporting its health benefits, particularly for cardiovascular health. Frequent sauna use (4-7 times per week) was associated with significantly reduced risk of fatal cardiovascular events like coronary artery disease and stroke in a large Finnish cohort study, with a dose-response relationship showing cardiovascular mortality rates of 10.1, 7.6, and 2.7 per 1000 person-years for one, two to three, or greater than four sessions weekly.
Cardiovascular effects include reduction in risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and neurocognitive diseases. The mechanisms involve improved endothelium-dependent dilatation, reduced arterial stiffness, autonomic nervous system modulation, and beneficial changes in lipid profiles. Acute sauna bathing decreases blood pressure and improves markers like arterial stiffness.
Other benefits include:
Reduction in pulmonary disease risk and amelioration of arthritis, headache, and flu symptoms
Pain reduction, decreased stiffness, improved mobility in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and osteoarthritis, with reductions in inflammatory markers
Reduced risk of psychotic disorders with frequent sauna use
Potential blood pressure reduction in hypertensive patients and improved left ventricular ejection fraction in chronic heart failure
Sauna bathing is well tolerated by most healthy adults and children, and is safe during uncomplicated pregnancies. The strongest evidence comes from Finnish sauna studies (80-100°C, dry heat), though infrared saunas and other heat modalities show similar benefits.
